How soft drinks impact your health

Check out this graphic to see how drinking a soda affects your health, from the moment it enters your mouth to the time it is absorbed into the rest of your body, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Free Radicals - Why Free Radicals May Be The 21st Century Most Silent But Deadly Killer In Our Bodies

Free Radicals - Why Free Radicals May Be The 21st Century Most Silent But Deadly Killer In Our Bodies

Cancers, diabetes, infertility, High Blood Pressure, weak erection, strokes, and cataracts seem as different from one another as any diseases could be. It's hard to imagine them sharing a single cause. Yet a growing body of research suggests that they do. The causal chain behind these and many other diseases, perhaps behind aging itself, includes a common link: a class of molecules known as free radicals.
Imagine that inside your body, there are a bunch of little monsters carrying hammers. And these monsters decide they don't like you, so they begin beating away at your DNA and cell membrane. Because of this, your cells are now damaged and this has opened the pathway for diseases. In essence, this is what free radicals do to our body. Instead of little monsters though, they are actually groups of atoms with an odd number of electrons. If you can recall from chemistry (one of my favorite subjects), electrons like to be in pairs. Whenever an atom has an unpaired electron, it goes crazy trying to find another electron to pair up with. Because these atoms often times cannot find a free electron, they bounce around our body and damage our DNA and the cell membrane. Now one unpaired electron may not cause much damage, but what about a large number of them? To put it in perspective, imagine a 3 followed by 23 zeros. This is what it would look like:
300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. It is believed that this is the number of free radicals an average person has in their body. Now, imagine that many atoms (three hundred sextillion) damaging our cells constantly.
You may be telling yourself, "Okay that's bad, but how do they get in my body?"

Where do these free radicals come from?

It's absolutely impossible to avoid free radicals. They come from:
  • Sun- or any other type of radiation
  • Pollution- this includes cigarette smoke, which is a MAJOR source of free radicals
  • Food- in 2 ways: 1) the pesticides, chemicals and metals that are in our foods today and 2) the digestion of fats makes a lot of free radicals
  • Stress- both physical and mental. Ironically, those who exercise too much are actually increasing the oxidative damage to their bodies. That's why you hear about the marathon runner who drops dead of a heart attack. Don't use this as an excuse to not exercise though :) Moderate exercise is of course good for you.
  • Your own body- yes, just the act of breathing and creating energy for your body makes free radicals.

Some researchers believe that the discovery of the effects of free radicals may be as big an advance as Pasteur's insights into infectious disease. In a sense, free radicals take medical theory one level deeper. While the mechanisms of infectious disease involve microorganisms and cells, free radicals involve something more fundamental: the subatomic realm of electrons.
Free radicals are molecules, usually of oxygen, that have lost an electron. That loss makes them unstable (in chemical terms, reactive). They begin to covet their neighboring molecules' electrons. In stealing an electron, they operate as terrorists in the body. They can attack DNA, leading to dysfunction, mutation, and cancer. They can attack enzymes and proteins, disrupting normal cell activities, or cell membranes, producing a chain reaction of destruction. Such membrane damage in the cells that line our blood vessels can lead to hardening and thickening of the arteries and eventually to heart attacks and strokes. Free-radical attacks on collagen can cause cross-linking of protein molecules, resulting in stiffness in the tissue.
Diseases linked to oxy radicals and reactive oxygen species
· Cancer.
· Arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis.
· Heart disease.
· Cerebrovascular disease.
· Stroke.
· Emphysema (Cross et al 1987).
· Diabetes mellitus (Sato et al 1979).
· Rheumatoid arthritis (Cross et al 1987, Greenwald & Moy 1979, 1980, Halliwell 1981, 1989, Del Maestro et al 1982, Fligiel et al 1984).
· Osteoporosis (Hooper 1989, Stringer et al 1989).
· Ulcers.
· Sunburn.
· Cataracts (Niwa & Hansen, 1989, Yagi 1977).
· Crohn's disease (Niwa & Hansen 1989).
· Behcet's disease
· Aging
· Senility

If exercising doesn't help, then what does?
One way in which we can reduce the number of free radicals is to consume antioxidants. Antioxidants are typically found in foods such as dark chocolate, blueberries, cranberries, apples, black plums, black beans, etc. What is the problem with this? Well, for starters, antioxidants can only reduce free radicals on a one to one basis. This means that if you consume one antioxidant serving, you get rid of one free radical. Now, even if I consumed 100 servings of blueberries, would I even be making a dent in the free radical number? Unfortunately, the answer is no.

Trevo's ORAC rating has just been confirmed....
ORAC refers to the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, and is used in measuring antioxidant capacities. Trevo has confirmed that its nutrient-dense formula sits in an entirely separate category way above juice drinks or other types of nutritional products. Trevo's ORAC rating is a phenomenal rating of over 373,000 per 32 ounce bottle! That’s nearly 12,000 per ounce! This record-breaking score has been tested and confirmed by the scientists at the world-renowned Brunswick Laboratories.
What about CAP-e testing?
CAP-e refers to Cell-based Antioxidant Protection in Erythrocytes and is the latest testing method in cutting-edge antioxidant activity measurements. (Erythrocyte is the scientific term for red blood cell.) CAP-e testing demonstrates if natural products contain antioxidants capable of protecting live cells from free radical damage. When a protective effect is seen in the CAP-e testing, it shows a biologically meaningful antioxidant protection by the product. The results of Trévo’s CAP-e testing are particularly exciting in the fact they show how quickly and effectively its antioxidant benefits manifest on a cellular level.
The result?

How to stay healthy?

How to stay healthy?

Human body is certainly a masterpiece of nature that we were born with immunity and self-healing ability. Though our body complexities cannot be fully understood, health scientists have found out the major factors affecting our health, generally speaking, can be categorized as follows.

1. Lifestyle 60%

2. Environment 17%

3. Heredity 15%

4. Medical Condition 8%

Out of the four factors, lifestyle counts the most. Also, it is the only factor that we can alter. If we continually practice damaging or self-defeating lifestyles, we will suffer from recurrent and chronic health problems along with frequent clinic visit, lifetime drug companion, and occasional hospitalization and surgery.

Thus, we should live in a healthy way immediately by:

- Balance diets and sufficient nutrients intake

- Enough rest and plenty of sleep

- Encourage variety of interests

- Ease the pressure and stress

- Selection of natural health supplement from reliable brand
