Eating Yam and Intake of Folic acid Increase Opportunity of Conceiving Twins

It's an interesting, but little-known fact that the rate of twin births in West Africa is about four times higher than in the rest of the world. The centre of this twin zone is Igbo-Ora, a sleepy southwest town in Nigeria.

Igbo-Ora is a town in Oyo State, south-western Nigeria, situated 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of Lagos. In 2001 the population of the town was approximately 60,000 people. The unusually large number of twin births in the region have earned the town the nickname Twin Capital of the World.

This phenomenon of a large number of twin births is not unique to Igbo-Ora; it has also been observed in the town of Kodinji in India and Cândido Godói in Brasil. In Igbo-Ora, research has suggested that the multiple births could be related to the eating habits of the women in the region.[1] Though no direct relation between dietary intake and twin births has been proved, a research study carried out at the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital has suggested that a chemical found in Igbo-Ora women and the peelings of a widely consumed tuber (yams) could be responsible.

There is of course the possible explanation that the large number of twins being born here could simply be a matter of genetics.

Obviously yam is a staple in every Nigerian home, but yam is central to Yoruba people’s diet. We eat it boiled; fried, roasted, pounded, and dried yam is grounded to make amala.So can yam really be attributed to the high rate of twin births in the south-west? Many scientists believe so, and women trying to conceive in western parts of the world are desperately looking for yams in order to boost their chances of having twins.

Double pregnancies occur either when a fertilized egg is implanted in the uterine wall and develops into a zygote which splits into two embryos, in which case the offspring results in “identical twins;” or when two eggs are produced and fertilized and implanted in the uterine wall separately, in which case the offspring results in “fraternal” or “non-identical twins.”

There are many different reasons why a couple might want to have twins. Some women only want to go through one pregnancy so having twins gives you a full complete family all in one shot. Some women have trouble conceiving, a twin pregnancy may likely be her only one. While some people like me are just simply fascinated by twins. If you are one of these women you might want to get a yam cookbook.

I’m no genetic scientist, but I say it’s worth a try if you really want multiples. At least consciously incorporating more yams in your diet does you no harm, and besides it’s better than some dangerous tips advocating progesterone creams, and the prescription drug clomidto conceive twins.

Obviously this is not a fool-proof way to try and have twins as nobody knows how much yam one has to eat. Also, it’s uncertain whether the effects of eating yam on a woman trying to conceive are immediate or cumulative. Most importantly, nobody has provided any specific explanation or medical evidence that could prove that yam consumption can cause multiple births.It’s pure speculation.

Apart from eating Yam another amazing discovery I stumbled upon this morning while researching on How to have twins was that the intake of Folic acid gotten from Dietary Suppliment that has Folic Acid increases the chances of having twins according to researchers.

Many use the vitamin before and during pregnancy to reduce the risk of their babies being born with neural-tube defects, such as spina bifida.

Nutritionists have been pressing the British government to follow the U.S. example and make the addition of folic acid to breakfast cereals and bread compulsory.

This move has brought down the number of cases of spina bifida in the U.S. by one fifth since 1998. But the research, by a team under Dr Bengt Kallen of the Tomblad Instititute in Lund, Sweden, appears to cast doubt on the wisdowm of the idea.

The scientists studied the cases of 2,569 women who told the Swedish Medical Birth Registry they had used folic acid supplements.

The rate of twin births among these women was 2.8 per cent - almost twice that in the general population, where 1.5 per cent of births were twins.

Dr Kallen calculated that, if 30 per cent of 100,000 women in Sweden took folic acid supplements, there would be 225 extra pairs of twins.

In Her Own Words... Georgia’s Story

One Saturday morning in St. Louis, MO, when Mark was only 3 years old, I was suddenly
stricken with an excruciating headache. My neighbor called 911 and I was transported to
a local hospital, where I was admitted as an in-patient. I spent the next two weeks in the
hospital, undergoing just about every kind of test you can imagine in an effort to find out
what was wrong.

There were many times after that initial episode when I would be in the hospital for weeks at a time. It was determined that I was suffering from chronic migraines. For years, the pain intruded into every aspect
