Thyroid and Fertility Problems

If you have been unsuccessfully trying to get pregnant for more than six months, before you embark on invasive medical procedures and spend thousands of naira for assisted reproductive technology, ensure that you rule out any thyroid problem.

Many women do not realise that a good thyroid function is necessary for fertility, the ability to conceive and to maintain a pregnancy.  A low or hyper functioning thyroid gland can prevent you from achieving that much desired pregnancy. While there are many and varied reasons for infertility, sub-optimal thyroid function may be that “missing link” especially for those with no specific reproductive problems.

A full thyroid evaluation is essential, and should be done as soon as possible for any woman who wants to get pregnant, especially if she has been trying to get pregnant for more than six months, had two or more miscarriages, has irregular menstrual cycle or a family history of thyroid problems.

Also, in general for both male and female, low libido, erectile dysfunction, lethargy, fatigue and consistent weight gain may also suggest the need for thyroid evaluation.

What is a thyroid gland?

The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland in your neck. It makes two hormones that are secreted into the blood: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones are necessary for all the cells in your body to work normally.

Thyroid disorders are very common and tend mainly to occur in women, although anybody - men, teenagers, children and babies, too - can be affected. About one in 20 people has some kind of thyroid disorder, which may be temporary or permanent.

The thyroid gland lies in the front of your neck in a position just below your Adam’s apple. It is made up of two lobes - the right lobe and the left lobe, each about the size of a plum cut in half - and these two lobes are joined by a small bridge of thyroid tissue called the isthmus. The two lobes lie on either side of your wind-pipe.

What does my thyroid gland do?

The thyroid makes two hormones that it secretes into the blood stream. One is called thyroxine; this hormone contains four atoms of iodine and is often called T4. The other is called triiodothyronine, which contains three atoms of iodine and is often called T3. In the cells and tissues of the body the T4 is converted to T3. It is the T3, derived from T4 or secreted as T3 from the thyroid gland, which is biologically active and influences the activity of all the cells and tissues of your body.

What do my thyroid hormones do for me?

The T4, or rather the T3 derived from it, and the T3 secreted directly by the thyroid gland influence the metabolism of your body cells. In other words, it regulates the speed with which your body cells work. If too much of the thyroid hormones are secreted, the body cells work faster than normal, and you have hyperthyroidism. If you become hyperthyroid because of too much secretion of the hormones from the thyroid gland, the increased activity of your body cells or body organs may lead, for example, to a quickening of your heart rate or increased activity of your intestine so that you have frequent bowel motions or even diarrhoea.

On the other hand if too little of the thyroid hormones are produced (known as hypothyroidism), the cells and organs of your body slow down. If you become hypothyroid, your heart rate, for example, may be slower than normal and your intestines work sluggishly, so you become constipated.

What can go wrong with my thyroid?

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) - not enough thyroxine is produced for the body’s needs.
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) - too much thyroxine is produced for the body’s needs.
Hypothyroidism is the most common disorder.

What are the most common symptoms of the most common thyroid disorders that I might experience?

Hypothyroidism: tiredness, feeling cold, weight gain, poor concentration, depression.
Hyperthyroidism: weight loss, heat intolerance, anxiety, and, sometimes, sore and gritty eyes.
Sometimes there are very few symptoms. A blood test from your doctor will confirm whether or not you have a thyroid disorder.

How does hypothyroidism affect fertility?

Hypothyroidism can make a woman experience her menstrual cycle without ovulating (she is not releasing any egg). This makes pregnancy impossible.

Luteal phase problems – A person with a short second half of the menstrual cycle who gets a fertilised egg after intercourse will discover that such fertilised egg cannot implant securely and ends up leaving the body at the same time that menstruation would occur (very early miscarriage). This is often mistaken as a regular period.

Other problems associated with hypothyroidism include high prolactin levels; low production of sex hormone binding globulin, estrogen dominance, progesterone deficiency, all of which interfere with proper reproductive hormone balance.

A new study supports the notion that thyroid disorders can cause significant reproductive problems for women.

Thyroid and Fertility Problems Solutions

Women More Prone to Anxiety Than Men, Just Discovered

Struggling with anxiety? Then odds are you're a woman and you live in either North America or Western Europe.

That's the conclusion of a new British study that found that women are twice as likely to suffer from anxiety as men.

Moreover, people in North America and Western Europe are more prone to anxiety disorders than those from other parts of the world. In North America, nearly eight of 100 people suffer from anxiety -- the most in the world. In East Asia, it's fewer than three in 100 -- the lowest, the review authors noted.

"Anxiety is important and shouldn't be overlooked," said lead researcher Olivia Remes, who's with the department of public health and primary care at the University of Cambridge's Strangeways Research Laboratory. "Sometimes people think that anxiety is just a part of their personality or that there's nothing they can do about it, but there is."

Anxiety disorders are characterized by excessive worry, fear and avoidance of potentially stressful situations, such as social gatherings.

"There are treatments, including psychological treatments and medication, and other things people can do to help their mental health, such as physical activity, meditation and yoga," Remes said.

For the review, Remes and her colleagues looked at more than 1,200 previously published studies about anxiety, and focused on 48 of them.

The investigators found that from 1990 to 2010, the overall number of people with an anxiety disorder remained about the same -- approximately four out of every 100.

Women were nearly twice as likely as men to have an anxiety disorder (9 percent). And as many as 10 percent of men and women under 35 had an anxiety disorder, the researchers found.

It's not known why women seem more prone to anxiety, but it could be differences in brain chemistry between the two genders, Remes suggested.

Women are also more likely to suffer from other mental health problems, such as depression, she said. In addition, men may also be less likely to report mental health problems.

It's not known why young people are more likely to develop anxiety. It might be that older people are better able to hide their anxiety, Remes said.

In addition, those suffering from other health problems are more likely to have anxiety disorders, with as many as 70 percent reporting anxiety among their physical ills, the review found.

Among people with heart disease, for example, about 11 percent living in Western countries have an anxiety disorder, especially women, Remes said. People with multiple sclerosis are the most affected, with as many as 32 percent reporting an anxiety disorder.

In addition, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which is an anxiety disorder, may sometimes only affect women during pregnancy and after giving birth, the researchers found. Only one in 100 in the general population is affected by OCD. But, among pregnant women, the number is doubled and slightly higher than that among women right after giving birth, the review showed.

In the United States, anxiety disorders are estimated to cost $42 billion a year. In the European Union, more than 60 million people suffer from anxiety disorders in a given year, according to background information in the report.

Remes and her colleagues also found that information for some populations was lacking or of poor quality. This was particularly true for certain communities, such as native populations in North America, Australia and New Zealand.

"Anxiety can be expressed differently in other cultures," Remes said. "For example, social anxiety in the West -- people are worried that people are always looking at them, being critical -- they are extremely self-conscious, whereas people in Asian cultures are afraid of causing others offense."

Dr. Jeffrey Borenstein is president and CEO of the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation in New York City. He said more research is needed on anxiety disorders and treatments that are culturally sensitive.

"Anxiety disorder hasn't gotten the attention it should," he said.

"There are effective treatments, including talk therapy, medication and lifestyle changes," Borenstein said. "There are a number of steps people can take to help their condition."

The study findings were published in the June issue of the journal Brain and Behavior.

In  Africa Anxiety causes delay for most women waiting for the fruit of the womb as found with most Nigeria women

What hormones cause anxiety?

Thyroid imbalance such as hyperthyroidism (over-active thyroid) can cause not only anxiety, but heart palpitations and panic attacks as well. A simple blood test can reveal if your thyroid hormone levels are out of balance, and help determine if you need medication.

6 Other Reasons Why L-Arginine Improves Fertility in Men and Women

L-arginine is an amino acid often taken as a supplement by couples facing fertility issues. L-arginine is a semi essential amino acid used in a number of physiological functions. The body is able to make l-arginine, though dietary intake is important for ensuring you have enough of this amino acid. Good dietary sources include nuts, lentils, kidney beans and fresh soybeans. Other dietary sources include egg yolk, meats and dairy products.

L-arginine is important for optimum health, and is thought to protect against a number of health conditions.

L-arginine is important for a strong immune system, and is also recommended for couples facing fertility issues. As well as eating a diet rich in the food sources mentioned above, you may wish to take a daily supplement to increase your l-arginine intake. Speak to your healthcare provider for advice before you begin taking a new supplement.

L-arginine is thought to improve the reproductive health of both men and women because:

1. It increases blood circulation to the uterus, ovaries and genitals - increased blood flow can improve reproductive health. L-arginine allows for better blood circulation to the ovaries, allowing for optimum egg production. The increased blood flow to the uterus also creates a better environment to allow the implantation of a fertilized egg. Blood flow is important for the proper functioning of the reproductive organs, and may improve the chances of conception.

2. It increases Nitric Oxide levels - L-arginine is used by the body to create Nitric Oxide (NO). Research has found that increased NO levels supports healthy inflammation levels which may help to prevent uterine fertility issues such as fibroids, endometriosis and PCOS. Inflammation is a contributing factor to a number of fertility issues shown to negatively impact conception and implantation.

3. Supports normal sperm production - research has found that taking a l-arginine supplement daily can increase sperm production in men. In the study, the effects were noticeable 6-8 weeks from the start of supplementation. L-arginine may also improve the motility of sperm, thus increasing the chance of conception in couples suffering from low sperm motility. Where IVF is used, l-arginine can be used to improve the quality of sperm, increasing the the chance of achieving a fertilized egg.

4. Improve the production of cervical mucous - the increased blood flow to the reproductive organs can aid in the production of cervical mucous. Abnormal mucous production contributes to the challenges faced by around 1 in 20 women dealing with fertility issues. Some women do not produce enough cervical mucous, and others produce a mucous that is too thick for sperm to travel through. L-arginine can encourage better production of cervical mucous through improved blood flow.

5. Supports a healthy libido – L-arginine increases blood flow to the genitals in both men and women, leading to an increased libido. In men, increased blood flow to the penis can result in more frequent and sustained erections. L-arginine is often suggested for men suffering from erectile dysfunction. In women, increased blood flow to the genitals can lead to increased sexual arousal and orgasm. A healthy libido plays an important role in conception.

6. Improves Heart Health

Research shows that l-arginine is beneficial for lowering inflammation and improving the health of the blood vessels and cardiovascular system, which is why it’s one of the most popular supplements recommended by cardiologists. For people with high risk factors for coronary heart disease, L-arginine supplements can be an effective measure for preventing a heart attack or stroke.

Some of the ways that L-arginine improves cardiovascular health include: preventing high blood pressure, improving blood flow in people with clogged arteries (coronary artery disease), lowering high cholesterol, helping to relieve congestive heart failure, improving stamina, and reducing symptoms associated with cut-off blood flow from the heart to the limbs (called claudication).

It’s also commonly used for treating chest pains (angina pectoris) because of the effects of nitric oxide preventing blood clots (thrombosis) that cut off blood supply. Two to three grams a day of  L-arginine supplementation has been shown to resolve nitrate intolerance in most people with angina according to some studies. And finally, L-arginine is capable of safely improving exercise performance in people with low stamina, circulation problems and a history of heart disease.

Other L-arginine benefits include:

    fighting inflammation
lowering risk for arteriosclerosis and heart attack
    repairing blood vessels
fighting congestive heart failure (CHF) and coronary artery disease
    helping lower high blood pressure
    improving athletic performance
    increasing immune function
reducing muscle pains (especially in the legs caused by blocked arteries)
    improving kidney function
    improving mental capacity
    fighting dementia
correcting impotence, erectile dysfunction (ED) and male infertility
    preventing the common cold

L-Arginine- Male Infertility Treatment

L-Arginine

Arginine is one of the 20 amino acids that constitute protein. Some of arginine’s health benefits include immune system support, cardiovascular system support, and weight management support. Arginine also appears to be of benefit in male fertility and aids in liver detoxification.

*Supports digestive and gastrointestinal system health, heart health, immune system health, women and  men’s health, weight management

What is Male Infertility?

Male infertility is any health issue in a man that lowers the chances of his female partner getting pregnant.

About 13 out of 100 couples can't get pregnant with unprotected sex. There are many causes for infertility in men and women. In over a third of infertility cases, the problem is with the man. This is most often due to problems with his sperm production or with sperm delivery.
What Happens Under Normal Conditions?

The man's body makes tiny cells called sperm. During sex, ejaculation normally delivers the sperm into the woman's body.

The male reproductive system makes, stores, and transports sperm. Chemicals in your body called hormones control this. Sperm and male sex hormone (testosterone) are made in the 2 testicles. The testicles are in the scrotum, a sac of skin below the penis. When the sperm leave the testicles, they go into a tube behind each testicle. This tube is called the epididymis.

Just before ejaculation, the sperm go from the epididymis into another set of tubes. These tubes are called the vas deferens. Each vas deferens leads from the epididymis to behind your bladder in the pelvis. There each vas deferens joins the ejaculatory duct from the seminal vesicle. When you ejaculate, the sperm mix with fluid from the prostate and seminal vesicles. This forms semen. Semen then travels through the urethra and out of the penis.

Male fertility depends on your body making normal sperm and delivering them. The sperm go into the female partner's vagina. The sperm travel through her cervix into her uterus to her fallopian tubes. There, if a sperm and egg meet, fertilization happens.

The system only works when genes, hormone levels and environmental conditions are right.

L-Arginine- Male Infertility Treatment Solution

Studies show that male and female fertility can be enhanced with l-arginine supplementation. This amino acid is needed to perform a range of functions within the body and is particularly important for the circularity system.

As the precursor to nitric oxide (NO), l-arginine is essential for enhancing blood flow throughout the body. This supports strong erections and a healthy environment in the uterus for embryo implantation.

Several studies have confirmed that regularly taking l-arginine supplements will improve sperm development and  help to treat erectile dysfunction.

New research in the mid-1990’s investigated in more detail the effects of l-arginine on sperm. Aydin and colleagues treated 45 male patients with low sperm count (oligospermia) and poor mobility (asthenospermia) with either l-arginine, indomethacin (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) or kallikrein (an enzyme that support sperm motility).

At the end of the three month study period, l-arginine showed the most promise for treating asthenospermia and oligospermia.

Female fertility is also supported by healthy l-arginine concentrations. As this amino acid supports blood circulation it helps to maintain the blood flow to the genitals, uterus, and ovaries. Oxygen-rich blood flow is very important to allow the ovaries to support egg health. Research has shown that l-arginine supplementation can help to enhance endometrial receptivity, improve ovarian responses. Arginine also supports healthy cervical mucus, further supporting fertility.

L-Arginine is one out of 174 fertility ingredients found in Trevo and has happened so many both men and women undergoing fertility issues to carry their babies with out any delay because of its potency and also ability to balance hormonal issues.
